You grow your own vegetables, choose organics and swap plastic for glass. You’re proactive about your family’s health. But is your water carrying the contaminants you’re trying to avoid? From Hutchinson to Hastings and down to Faribault, Minnesota homeowners are discovering that clear water isn’t always filtered to the highest standards. Here is why many are choosing to install Kinetico® Water Treatment Systems for more peace of mind.
City water vs. well water: The invisible risks
In Minnesota, current water issues center on emerging chemical contaminants, aging infrastructure and the growing strain on resources.
Municipal water treatment facilities provide general purpose water that meets basic government standards. However, southern Minnesota’s water quality is constantly challenged. Contaminants such as PFAS (forever chemicals), microplastics, lead, arsenic and nitrates are frequently in the headlines. Local communities such as Apple Valley and Hastings, for example, have faced significant PFAS challenges as well as a surge in microplastics.
There are many miles of pipes between the water treatment facility and your tap. As water travels, it can pick up more than 10,000 different substances humans dump onto the ground and into the land and water. Contamination can come from from everyday activities such as animal waste and human waste, which may release excess pharmaceuticals or even illicit drugs into the environment. Additional sources include accidental spills, improperly disposed products and manufacturing waste not yet recognized as harmful. This can range from small gasoline leaks at service stations to improperly discarded paint and household chemicals.
Private wells aren’t regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act. It is up to homeowners to ensure their water is properly tested. Common well water issues include the presence of hydrogen sulfide (that rotten egg smell), bacterial iron, manganese and radium. There can also be contaminants such as arsenic, nitrate, fertilizers, pesticides, etc. which can be health concerns.
Only one drinking water system, the Kinetico® K5 Drinking Water Station with VOC Guard, is so advanced that it can eliminate nearly everything from your home’s drinking water that isn’t water.
Can a drought increase water quality concerns?
Does your water seem different in the summer? You might be correct.
Whenever Southern Minnesota experiences drought conditions, water quality challenges intensify. As water levels drop, existing pollutants can become more concentrated. Dry periods also increase demand for lawn irrigation, putting additional stress on pumps and filtration systems.
City water plants must work harder to maintain safety standards by increasing the use of disinfectants such as chlorine. While necessary for basic safety, these chemicals may affect the taste, smell and feel of your water.
Pending Federal legislation: Help is coming. But should you wait?
The 2026 Farm Bill (Health H20 Act), supported by the Water Quality Association (WQA), would authorize the USDA to fund water testing and certified treatment technologies for rural communities. Additionally, Minnesota legislators are debating a $12 billion plan to maintain drinking water and wastewater infrastructure over the next 20 years. Some cities, such as Hastings, are building multi-million dollar treatment plants to remove these chemicals.

What can water filtration remove?
Not all drinking water filtration systems work the same way. Carbon filters work by trapping contaminants. They can improve taste and odor by removing chlorine, sediment and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
A Reverse Osmosis (RO) system provides a much broader spectrum of filtration, reducing dissolved solids, heavy metals, fluoride and arsenic. The Kinetico® K5 Drinking Water Station with VOC Guard stands above the rest by reducing more than 70 contaminants typically found in water supplies including PFAS, VOCs, arsenic, nitrates, radium, chlorine, chloramine and more.
