How do I know when it’s time to add salt to my water softener and how much do I add?

Lift the lid off the brine tank to check the salt level. If you can see water at the bottom, it is time to add salt. You can add salt any time there is enough room to accommodate at least one bag. However, take note that keeping the brine tank completely full of salt can contribute to salt bridging, which prevents the softener from regenerating properly. For a standard size brine drum, we recommend not to exceed 2/3 of its capacity. If you have a smaller size brine drum (short and square vs. round) it is ok to fill it

What is the noise I hear coming from the water softener?

In most cases, the sound is perfectly normal. It’s the regeneration process, when water flows through the softener to clean the resin and prepare it for continued use. Kinetico water softeners regenerate based on your household’s actual water usage, so this can happen at any time, day or night. A typical regeneration cycle lasts about 30–60 minutes. If the noise continues for much longer or repeats unusually often without high water use throughout the house, check the system to make sure it has completed regeneration and nothing else is going on. Contact our team if you’re unsure.

How often will my water softener regenerate?

Unlike many electric water softeners that regenerate on a set schedule, Kinetico® systems are non-electric and meter your actual water use. They regenerate only when needed, which can mean multiple times a day during high demand or not at all when you’re away. Thanks to Kinetico’s twin-tank design, you always have soft water available, even during the cleaning cycle.

How do I manually regenerate my Kinetico water softener?

Using a No. 2 Phillips screwdriver, push down firmly on the softener valve screw and slowly turn clockwise until the actuator has advanced the indicator dot to the “BRINE” position. You should hear at least five “clicks” while turning the screw before the indicator dot reaches the “BRINE” position. At this point you should hear water begin to run through the system. If you do not hear water running through the system, the indicator dot has not been advanced far enough. Repeat the procedure for manual regeneration after the water flow stops (11 to 90 minutes, depending on the model)

What type of salt should I use?

The best choice is pellet salt, designed for water softeners, that is 99.6% pure or more. Impure salts, such as solar or rock salt, may cause a salt bridge (thick block of salt) in the brine drum or may clog up the system with debris. This will cause your system to work inefficiently or to malfunction causing you to experience hard water. If you need a salt fill up, Haferman sells salt in our store. We can also deliver it and, during the same visit, test your water to confirm your system is operating efficiently. We also offer fill up

Why are my glasses spotting since I’ve had my water softener installed?

The spotting you see may actually be an etching of the glass. The cause for this etching is excess phosphate substances found in many dishwashing detergents. These phosphates are added to soaps and detergents as a chemical water softener. In already softened water, the extra softening causes a problem. To protect your china and glassware, reduce the amount of soap used, and since heat plays a big part in this problem as well, use the “energy saver” feature or no heat air dry to combat etching.

Should I use the same amount of cleaning products as I used before my Kinetico water softener was installed?

When using soap or cleaners with soft water, start by cutting the amount of soap you normally use in half. You may even find you can use as little as a quarter of the amount you were using before. Hardness minerals in water interfere with soap’s cleaning ability. Once they are removed, soap can do its job better. Even though you’ll use less soap, you’ll get more suds and cleaner results.

What should I do if I have a leak?

If water is leaking from your system anywhere other than the discharge hose to a drain, turn off the water supply at the water softener bypass or the valve leading to your reverse osmosis system. Take a photo of the area of the leak and text it to 952-894-2040 or send it by email to service@hafermanwater.com. You may also call our office or use the form to the right. Our voicemail and email are monitored on nights and weekends. Our team will dispatch a technician to assist.

Which softener is right for me?

Not all water softeners are created equal. Standard single-tank softeners use electricity, regenerate on a timer, and provide hard water during cleaning cycles. Kinetico® softeners use two tanks, operate without electricity, and regenerate only when needed. This ensures a continuous supply of soft water while using less salt and water. They also last longer, often 20–30 years compared with 2–12 years for typical electric systems. If you want maximum efficiency, minimal maintenance and the longest lifespan, Kinetico® is a smart investment.

How do I know if I need a water softener?

Common signs you may need a water softener include soap scum on sinks and tubs, water spots on dishes and glassware, dry or itchy skin after bathing, and mineral scale on faucets, showerheads, or inside appliances. You may also notice your laundry looking dull or feeling stiff. These issues are caused by hardness minerals such as calcium and magnesium. A water softener removes these minerals, protecting your plumbing and appliances, and helping you get cleaner clothes, shinier dishes and softer skin.
