What is Hard Water?

It’s a simple question, but it is one we feel should be answered thoroughly. After all, we supply water softeners to the Howard Lake area, so we want to be sure our customers know what hard water is and why it is a problem.

Definition of Hard Water

The simplest definition of hard water is water that has a mineral content that is high. It is formed when water passes through deposits that are high in calcium and magnesium. Some examples of this are chalk, dolomite and limestone. While hard water is not harmful to your health, it can pose a problem for water-using appliances and it can be a problem when it comes to cleaning your dishes, glassware, bathroom and more.

Signs of Hard Water

There are several things to watch out for when you think you might need to look into water softeners. For example, if you notice that suds don’t form when you use soap. Or maybe you’ve noticed white spots all over your dishes or glassware, even after they have been through your dishwasher. Hard water can also cause dry skin and dry and brittle hair. These are just a handful of signs that you should look into water softeners for your home. Water that is more than 10.5 gpg is classified as hard water.

Disadvantages of Hard Water

The biggest disadvantage of hard water is that it shortens the life of your plumbing and water-using appliances. And it can also decrease the effectiveness of cleaning chemicals and soap. So in the long run, you end up spending more on cleaning materials and appliances like your dishwasher are more likely to conk out sooner than they normally would.
