Haferman Water

What’s really in your drinking water? (And what standard tests miss)

Drinking water concerns are clearly top of mind for Minnesotans. At local and state fairs across our region, we observed that drinking water stations were among the most popular stops.

When doubts arise about tap water, many people reflexively reach for bottled water. However, you may be surprised to learn that between 40% and 64% of bottled water brands source their water from municipal (tap) water systems.

The Minnesota Department of Health has stated, “There is no reason to believe that bottled water is safer than tap water. Tap water and bottled water generally have the same quality standards.”

Further, testing by the Environmental Working Group found that bottled water contains, on average, 60 times more microplastics than tap water, all while costing significantly more over time.

What should you do if you want to avoid contaminants and have better tasting water?

Start by understanding what’s in your drinking water. This step doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. Haferman offers free, 2-minute water analyses to help you make sense of what’s coming out of your tap.

  • In-home testing and inspection: Our water specialists test for hardness, chlorine and iron while performing a visual inspection of your fixtures and water-using appliances to help pinpoint water quality issues.
  • Showroom testing: Prefer to drop by? Bring a few ounces of your tap water in a clean container to our office anytime Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. No appointment necessary. You can review your results with our experts while exploring our full lineup of Kinetico systems on the showroom floor.

But even standard home water test kits can’t detect some of the most concerning modern contaminants:

  • PFAS (“Forever Chemicals”): Extremely difficult to detect without specialized equipment.
  • Microplastics: Completely invisible to basic home test kits.

Plus, there are the environmental variances. Weather events, agricultural run-off and new housing developments are just a few causes of sudden spikes in municipal or well water contamination.

Sure, paying for comprehensive laboratory testing is an option. But full-panel lab tests can easily cost more than installing a long-term reverse osmosis filtration system, such as the Kinetico K5® Drinking Water Station.

Your worry-free home drinking water solution

Designed to solve even the toughest water challenges, the K5 now comes standard with a VOC filter. It gives you the ultimate protection from volatile organic compounds such as gasoline, solvents, cleaners and degreasers, paints, inks, dyes and pesticides.

The K5’s reverse osmosis (RO) membrane filters particles down to approximately 0.0001 microns. This tight pore size enables it to capture microscopic contaminants including heavy metals, microplastics, viruses and dissolved solids.

It’s your fastest and easiest way to get great-tasting, worry-free water.

Give thanks for better water

This Thanksgiving, as we gather with family and friends, we’re thankful for the letter K: for Kids, Kindness, the Kitchens where our holiday meals are prepared with care, and Kinetico’s K5® Drinking Water Station.
